Things done – 2021

things to do in cape town

As These are a list of things done in Cape Town as I explore my own city.

As the year progresses and the activities are completed, so I will add to this post.

DYLAN LEWIS SCULPTURE GARDEN

The morning after our wedding, the host of the B&B handed me a pamphlet for the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. That was back in 2017. Since that day I had wanted to visit by then I just never got around to it.

This year, due to me breaking the year down in to quarters, I finally got to it. I made the booking. My husband suggested I take my one sister, as he was sure I would have more fun. Don’t tell him, but yes I did have more fun. My sister has studied art, I have dabbled. So we had a lot of things to discuss.

The talent of Dylan Lewis is evident as you walk through the garden. As the receptionist had said, he has treated the garden and the pieces as a living organic sculpture.

We were impressed by the equal opportunity of nude female and male forms. And what really struck me was how the sculptures had movement forged in to them.

If like me, you had never heard of Dylan Lewis you will still recognise his work. Many of his sculptures are around Cape Town and his style is unmistakable.

So if you are looking for a day in Stellenbosch, walking in a garden and being surprised by what you find then I highly recommend the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. Booking is required as they try to keep the numbers at a pleasant level. And next year my sister and I will be returning with our sketchpads.

CLAY CAFE

Another activity that was on my list of things to do was the Clay Cafe in Hout Bay. They have subsequently opened another branch in the city bowl.

The concept of Clay Cafe is you paint the bisque items, then leave it for firing. And within 3 weeks your items are glazed, fired and ready for collection.

The setting at Clay Cafe, Hout Bay, is gorgeous and spacious. A popular venue, with a light lunch menu. Again my sister joined me for this outing, as my husband wasn’t that keen. We happily spent approximately 3 hours painting our various selections and having a meal.

To us the price of the bisque items and meal was reasonable. And again let me just say how popular it was. I hadn’t realised it would be so popular, and you will definitely need to book in advance.

DEEP SOUTH DISTILLERY

On a Friday afternoon, my colleagues and I went to the Deep South Distillery to have a gin tasting and tour. This charming craft gin distillery is a hidden gem and can be found on the way to Kommetjie. It is advised that you call ahead to book for the tasting and tour.

The tour was fascinating, and the process of making gin is a bit more complicated than I would have thought. It is interactive with a lot of smelling of the spices and the end results.

The tasting consisted of three different gins, with accompanying tonic waters and natural flavorings. The distillery has crafted award winning gins and is proud of not using artificial flavourings and colourants.

SEW IT TOGETHER

I did something new and interesting, I took sewing classes! The sewing studio is in Muizenberg and classes held on a Saturday morning. I had an absolute ball, and have re-honed my skills.

Classes are relaxed and you are able to go at your own pace. What is even more exciting, you go home home with items that you have made from a shopping bag, to a zippered purse and an apron.

Can definitely recommend this as a place to start!
